According to recent news, Uttarakhand is taking another significant step toward balancing tiger conservation and their natural habitat. In February 2025 the tiger population in Rajaji Tiger Reserve Park is set to increase as a tiger from Corbett National Park will be relocated to the western part of Rajaji National Park. This will be the 5th tiger transferred from Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) to Rajaji National Park in Dehradun. So far, 4 tigers - 2 males and 2 females, have been successfully introduced and settled in Rajaji. The western region of Rajaji National Park has been facing a decline in its tiger population. Despite having abundant natural resources, biodiversity was being affected due to the absence of tigers. In 2020, the Tiger Reintroduction Project was initiated by the Forest Department to tackle this problem. Under this initiative, strong and healthy tigers from Corbett are being relocated to Rajaji to restore ecological balance. The 4 tigers previously transferred have successfully adapted to their new environment and are now breeding naturally. According to forest officials, this project will not only help increase the tiger population but also contribute to maintaining the ecological stability of the forest.

Why Transfer from Corbett?

Jim Corbett National Park is well known for its dense tiger population, which continues to grow. Wildlife expert Sanjay Chhimwal explains that as the number of tigers in Corbett increased, competition for resources also intensified. To manage this, a decision was made to transfer five tigers from Corbett to Rajaji, ensuring a better distribution of the population and reducing pressure on resources.
